Games Like Solitaire Associations Journey: 6 Alternatives to Try

Enjoy Solitaire Associations Journey but want something different? Six word solitaire games with the same card-sorting idea, compared on lives, moves and ads.

By Association SolitairePublished 4 min read

Solitaire Associations Journey by Hitapps is the most popular word solitaire game on the App Store, with more than 224,000 ratings. If you have played through its levels, or want the same idea with different rules, there are now several games built on the same loop: place a category card, then sort matching word cards onto it before your moves run out.

This page lists six alternatives and what makes each one different. Ratings are from the US App Store at the end of September 2026; notes on lives and continues come from the store pages and our own play sessions on the same date.

Disclosure: we make Word Associations Solitaire, listed below.

Why people look for an alternative

Reading store reviews for the genre, the same reasons come up again and again:

  • Lives. In Solitaire Associations Journey, a failed level costs a life, and lives refill over time. Players who want to retry immediately look for games without lives.
  • The price of more moves. When moves ran out in our session, Journey offered +10 moves for 2,250 coins, or +5 moves for watching a video.
  • Ads. Ad frequency is the most common complaint across all free word games, not just this one.
  • Wanting new categories. After hundreds of levels, players want fresh associations.

None of this makes Journey a bad game. It has the most events and the biggest community. The alternatives below simply make different trade-offs.

1. Word Associations Solitaire

Our game. Word Associations Solitaire has no lives, so failing a level only means trying again. It has more than 2,900 levels and more than 870 categories, from everyday themes to specialised ones like fossils, vases and the Renaissance — browse them in the category library.

When you run out of moves, you can continue for coins or by watching a short video. There is a daily challenge, a Journey mode with themed chapters, adjustable text size, eight languages, and an optional purchase that removes pop-up ads between levels.

2. Word Solitaire Go

In our September session, Word Solitaire Go had no lives; when moves run out, you can watch a video for more moves or restart. Its store description emphasises strategy over speed: you start each level with a partially revealed layout and place group cards before filling them. It holds a 4.9 average from more than 2,900 ratings.

3. Word Solitaire Now!

Word Solitaire Now! (4.7, 28,000+ ratings) describes “hundreds of handcrafted levels with rising difficulty.” It is a puzzle-first game without the event layer, a good change of pace if Journey’s extras feel busy.

4. Word MindSort: Solitaire

Word MindSort (4.6, 8,000+ ratings) builds around Joker cards that add flexibility when a board gets tight, and it advertises no time limits. If you liked using Jokers in Journey, this one leans into them.

5. Associate Words – Solitaire Fun

Associate Words (4.9, 6,000+ ratings) simplifies the board: you drag words into category areas within a limited number of moves. Rounds are short, which makes it good for a quick break.

6. Word Solitaire: Match & Play

Match & Play (4.8, 2,800+ ratings) keeps the classic place-the-category-then-match loop and supports 19 languages according to its store page, useful if you prefer to play in a language other than English.

Will my skills carry over?

Yes. Every game on this list uses category cards, word cards and a move limit, so the habits that help in Journey help everywhere: reveal hidden cards early, don’t open a category you can’t finish soon, and treat collection slots as a limited resource. Our beginner’s guide and category examples apply to all of them.
