Best Word Solitaire Games in 2026: 7 Apps Compared
Seven word solitaire apps compared side by side: how each one plays, lives and move limits, ad options, and which kind of player each suits best.
Word solitaire took off in 2025: instead of suits and numbers, you sort word cards into category cards using familiar solitaire moves. Dozens of apps now share the idea, and their names are so similar that it is hard to tell them apart from the store listing alone.
This guide compares seven of them. Ratings and rating counts are from the US App Store at the end of September 2026; notes on lives, continues and ads come from the store descriptions and from our own play sessions on the same date. Apps change quickly, so check the current store page before you download.
Disclosure: we make Word Associations Solitaire, one of the games below. We have tried to describe every app, including ours, by what it actually does.

What separates one word solitaire app from another
The core loop is nearly identical everywhere: place a category card, stack matching words on it, clear the board before your moves run out. The differences that matter in daily play are elsewhere:
- Lives or no lives. Some games take a life when you fail a level and make you wait, pay coins or watch a video to keep playing. Others simply let you retry.
- What happens when moves run out. Most offer extra moves for coins or for watching a rewarded video. The price and the number of moves vary a lot.
- Ads and how to remove them. Almost every free word solitaire app shows ads. Some sell a “No Ads” upgrade; look in the In-App Purchases list on the store page.
- Category variety. A small category pool starts repeating after a few dozen levels. A large library keeps the associations fresh.
- Readability. Text size, card zoom and dark mode matter if you play for long sessions or on a small phone.
Solitaire Associations Journey
The best-known game in the genre, with more than 224,000 ratings on the App Store. Its store page calls it “the original word solitaire,” and it adds a full layer of events and progression on top of the puzzles.
In our session it used a lives system: failing a level costs a life, and lives refill over time or can be bought. When moves ran out, it offered +10 moves for coins or +5 moves for watching a video. If you enjoy events and collecting, it is the most complete package; if you prefer to retry freely, the lives can feel restrictive. We cover similar games in games like Solitaire Associations Journey.
Word Solitaire Now!
A tidy version of the format with “hundreds of handcrafted levels” of rising difficulty, according to its description. It focuses on the puzzle itself rather than events, which suits players who want a calm board and a steady difficulty curve.
Word MindSort: Solitaire
Word MindSort highlights its Joker cards, wild cards that give you extra flexibility when a board gets tight, and it advertises no time limits. Good for players who like a little more strategy in how they get unstuck.
Associate Words – Solitaire Fun
A fast, simple take: you drag words into their category areas within a limited number of moves. It has one of the highest average ratings in the genre and is a good pick for short sessions.
Word Solitaire Go
In our September session, Word Solitaire Go did not use lives. When you run out of moves, you can watch a video for more moves or restart. If waiting for lives is what bothers you about other games, this is one to try.
Word Solitaire: Match & Play
Match & Play follows the classic loop — place the category card, match the related words, clear within limited moves — and lists 19 supported languages on its store page, the widest language choice in this comparison.
Word Associations Solitaire (our game)
Word Associations Solitaire has no lives: a failed level costs nothing but a retry. It has more than 2,900 levels and more than 870 word categories, which you can browse in our category library. There is a daily challenge, themed Journey levels and a dictionary of the words you have collected.
When you are stuck, hints, shuffles, Jokers and undo are available, and running out of moves offers extra moves for coins or for a short video. You can adjust the text size, enlarge any card to read it, and play in eight languages. An optional purchase removes the pop-up ads between levels.
It has far fewer ratings than the big names above, so expect a smaller community and fewer events.
Is there a word solitaire game with no ads?
Not for free. Free word solitaire apps are paid for by ads, so the realistic options are:
- Buy the ad-removal upgrade if the game sells one. Check the store page’s In-App Purchases list for an item named “No Ads” or “Remove Ads” before you invest time in a game.
- Pick a game where ads are optional. Rewarded videos that you choose to watch for extra moves are far less disruptive than ads between every level.
- Pick a game without lives. In games with lives, ads often become the way to keep playing; without lives, you can always just retry.
How to choose
- You want events, leaderboards and the largest player base: Solitaire Associations Journey.
- You want to retry without waiting: Word Solitaire Go or Word Associations Solitaire.
- You want the most variety in categories: look for a large category library; ours is searchable online.
- You want readable cards for long sessions: see word solitaire for seniors for what to look for.
Whichever you pick, the same skills carry over. Our strategy guide works in any of these games.
